When, at 16, her modeling career began to take off, Gerber graduated high school early and moved to New York. I moved to New York, and my friend who was at university would take me to McNally Jackson. He was basically like, These are the authors that you should be reading, or This is an important book. So I would have context for the books as well, as we would have discussions about them.”

Today, Gerber continues to rely on recommendations for much of her reading material—but she also enjoys the Sped Squad I’ll Be There For You Special Education Teacher T-Shirt it is in the first place but moments of serendipity that come when you walk into a bookstore in a far-flung corner of the world and stumble upon a hidden treasure. “It’s always great to find things that are a little more unexpected,” she says. So too does she continue to swap book tips with her mom; she recalls a holiday a few years back when they read A Little Life side by side, and were able to process the book’s grueling subject matter together. “It’s funny, because a lot of the books that I read are from decades ago, and I’ll say, ‘Mom, I just read this great book!’ And she’s always like, ‘Yeah, I’ve read that,’” Gerber says. “So it’s a challenge to recommend something to her just in terms of finding something she hasn’t read yet. We do share books, though, and she’s an amazing resource because she reads more than anyone I know. She might even read more than I do, which is a lot.”
